Matthew Twongyeyirwe hails from the lush landscapes of southwestern Uganda, growing up near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP) in the Buhoma sector. His early years were filled with wildlife encounters, from Eastern mountain gorillas to Red-tailed monkeys, Olive baboons, and Crowned Eagles soaring above as he worked on his family’s plantations.
A Conservation-Focused Upbringing of Matthew Twongyeyirwe

Matthew Twongyeyirwe’s passion for nature was nurtured in a conservation-driven household. His family’s decision to donate 100 acres of land to the International Gorilla Conservation Organization helped create a thriving forest ecosystem that remains home to rare animal and bird species, which shows their dedication to environmental sustainability.

Matthew’s fascination with birding was sparked when he met two British birdwatchers at Buhoma, BINP. Peering through their binoculars, he was introduced to a world of close-up avian life observation which also ignited a lifelong passion for birdwatching and conservation.

Driven by his love for birds, Matthew has explored every corner of Uganda, honing his skills in bird identification and guiding. His extensive experience has made him a trusted expert in birdwatching, helping travelers discover Uganda’s rich avian diversity.

To enhance his expertise, Matthew Twongyeyirwe is an active member of the Uganda Safari Guides Association and the Uganda Bird Guides Club. He has participated in numerous nature guiding and interpretation courses, continuously expanding his knowledge to offer exceptional birding experiences
